NurseEQ Experiences

Experience the decisions that matter.

Four experience formats, each designed around a learning objective — from evolving, team-based situations to short, focused decisions that can be practised again and again.

Format follows the learning objective

Choose the experience that fits what learners need to practise.

Some objectives call for an evolving situation with a team and a family; others for a single, well-framed decision repeated until it becomes instinctive.

These are proposed experience formats under development with clinical review — not a catalogue of finished products.

Situation Rooms

Purpose
Complex, evolving clinical situations involving uncertainty, competing priorities, team members and communication — where learners must act and reassess as things change.
Learner experience
  • A situation that develops across several phases
  • Multiple decision points with choices that carry forward
  • Colleagues, patients and families to communicate with
  • Reassessment as new information arrives
  • A choice-specific debrief at the end
Typical duration
Typically 30–60 min
Dimensions often informed
  • Recognize
  • Prioritize
  • Decide
  • Act
  • Communicate
  • Adapt

How a Situation Room unfolds

  1. Phase 1 · Orientation

Meet the patient, the setting and the team.

  2. Phase 2 · Developing situation

Information arrives; priorities begin to compete.

  3. Phase 3 · Team and family

Communicate, delegate and escalate as needed.

  4. Phase 4 · Reassessment

Respond to how the situation has evolved.

  5. Debrief

Review choices, cues, reasoning and alternatives.

Short, focused decision experiences built around one meaningful moment — designed for repeated judgment practice between classes and placements.
Learner experience
  • A concise patient context and relevant observations
  • One to three focused decisions
  • Immediate, choice-specific consequence
  • A brief structured debrief
Typical duration
Typically 5–10 min
Dimensions often informed
  • Recognize
  • Prioritize
  • Decide

Clinical Cases

Purpose
Patient-centred decision experiences that connect assessment findings to nursing decisions and care planning.
Learner experience
  • A fictional patient's history, findings and context
  • Decisions that link assessment to nursing action
  • Reasoning prompts throughout
  • A debrief connecting choices to the patient's needs
Typical duration
Typically 10–20 min
Dimensions often informed
  • Recognize
  • Prioritize
  • Decide
  • Reflect

Skills Experiences

Purpose
Applied procedural, communication and competency-focused practice — placing skills within the clinical context in which they are used.
Learner experience
  • Guided practice of a procedure or conversation
  • Clinical context around each step
  • Decisions about timing, safety and communication
  • Reflection on what went well and what to refine
Typical duration
Duration varies
Dimensions often informed
  • Act
  • Communicate
  • Reflect

Dimensions listed are those a format is typically designed to inform. Each individual experience is mapped to specific dimensions during clinical review — no experience automatically assesses all seven.

Situation Room concept

Increasing breathlessness in palliative care.

A candidate concept showing the kind of situation a Situation Room is designed to explore. It describes the scenario only — the appropriate actions, escalation pathways and debrief will be defined by qualified nursing subject-matter experts.

  1. 01

    Setting the scene

A fictional patient receiving palliative care for an oncology diagnosis is resting on the ward. Goals of care focus on comfort and dignity.

  2. 02

Over the shift, the patient's breathlessness gradually increases. The change is noticeable, but not dramatic.

  3. 03

    A family member's concern

A family member approaches, visibly worried, asking what is happening and whether something should be done.

  4. 04

    What the learner must weigh

Noticing the change, considering priorities, communicating with compassion and escalating appropriately within their professional scope.
